Piscinola - Scampia, Chiaiano, Frullone - San Rocco, Colli Aminei (9), Policlinico, Rione Alto, Montedonzelli, Medaglie d'Oro, Vanvitelli, Cilea - Quattro Giornate(5, 7), Salvator Rosa, Materdei, Museo (2, 9, 10 ), Dante, Toledo, Municipio (6), Universita', Duomo, Garibaldi (2, 3, 4), Centro Direzionale (3), Tribunale (3), Poggioreale (3), Santa Maria del Pianto, Capodichino Aeroporto, Capodichino Di Vittorio (10), Secondigliano, Regina Margherita, Miano.


a) section Piscinola-Dante:
in use, opened in 1993 (Vanvitelli - Colli Aminei) and extended in 1995 (Colli Aminei - Piscinola) and in 2002 (Vanvitelli - Dante); length: 13 kms, 5 kms elevated between Piscinola and Colli Aminei and 8 Kms underground between Colli Aminei and Dante;
stations Cilea, Salvator Rosa and Museo and the related about 3.5 km long section are in use since april 5, 2001; station Dante and the Museo-Dante section (about 0.5 km) are in service since March 27, 2002;
Museo has since June 1, 2002 a direct connection via underground tapis roulants to Line 2 Piazza Cavour station, so it is actually a junction between lines 1 and 2, to be called Museo as a whole;
station Materdei is in service since July 5, 2003;
station Cilea is to be built and will be an interchange with Linea5 and Linea7 by means of a system of lifts and escalators (the lines operate with a difference in height of 120 metres). Works have been approved on March 13 2001 (see news -in Italian- from La Repubblica, or news -in Italian- from Il Mattino);
b) section Piscinola-Capodichino Aeroporto:
section opens by end 2011 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).
Work for section Secondigliano-Capodichino Aeroporto started in July 2000, and that for section Piscinola-Secondigliano in March 2001. The 4.364 Kms will be completely underground (see official news in Italian from Regione Campania).
Total cost of this section: 313 million euros.
This is actually a section of new Alifana Line, currently Metrocampania Nord-Est, which will link S.M. Capua Vetere, Aversa and Giugliano with Naples. The Aversa - Piscinola section of Alifana will open by end 2006 (11 kms, 5 stations, total cost 293 million euros). 1500-volt power supply will be adopted by network and by both Alifana and Metropolitana di Napoli trains, so as to use same tracks. Please note that Naples is the first city in Italy which will have a metro station just in the airport.
c) section Dante-Garibaldi:
the section will be ready by end 2008 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino). Section length is 5.3 kms. Works started in June 1999 in all of the five interested areas (apart from Garibaldi, started December 2000);
d) section Capodichino Aeroporto-Garibaldi:
will be completed in 2011 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino). Section length is 4 kms.


Technical data
Total length will be 25 Kms.
The slope is about 5% along almost all the Museo - Colli Aminei section.
Average depth of Vanvitelli - Dante section: 35 metres.
The frequency of line 1 will be of 3 minutes in rush hours.
The trains are currently composed by two or three units with a maximum capacity of 860 or 1,290 people.

March 1, 2001: Comune di Napoli investment plan approved. Linea 1 funding approved: in 2001 57.7 billion Lire for Vanvitelli-Dante section and 3.8 for Cilea interconnection, in 2002 200 billion Lire to close linea 1 loop. See press news from Il Mattino (in Italian).

March 31, 2001: Vanvitelli-Dante section stations have been designed by internationally famous architects and enriched with art pieces (see news #1 and news #2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

February 7, 2002: station Salvator Rosa, designed by Mendini, gets "The Prince and the Architect" award by Comune di Bologna at Europolis 2002 (see press release - in Italian - from La Repubblica).

June 1, 2002: the pedestrian connection tunnel between stations Museo (Linea1) and Cavour (Linea2) has entered service: 330 meters and two tapis roulants (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

July 13-15, 2002: disagreements on art works placed in station Rione Alto (Linea1) (see press release 1 and press release 2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino, and press release 3 - in Italian - from La Repubblica).

July 18, 2002: La Repubblica describes the new areas of station Rione Alto (Linea1) (see press release - in Italian).

July 20, 2002: the second exit will be made available at Rione Alto station (Linea1) (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino) (date postponed from July 25 due to Mr Casini's duties).

September 7, 2002: section Vanvitelli - Dante of Linea1 opened upon work completion (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

October 16, 2002: escalator-based path connecting Montesanto cablecar station and Vanvitelli station (Linea1) enters service (see press release 1 and press release 2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

November 2, 2002: signed agreement between Regione Campania and Italian Government on a two billion euro basis: fundings, among other things, for completions of Linea1, Linea 6 and Linea 7 (see news 1 and news 2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

November 15, 2002: vice-mayor Rocco Papa announces opening (probably on December 8) of second tunnel of Dante - Vanvitelli section (Linea1), end of shuttle service, and train frequency increase (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

November 30, 2002: Italian InterMinisterial Committee for Economic Programming (CIPE) funds 90 million euros to complete new Alifana line; also section Piscinola - Aeroporto of Linea1 has achieved fundings (see press release 1 and press release 2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

December 11, 2002: section Garibaldi - Aeroporto of Linea1 will be ready not earlier than 2005 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

December 12, 2002: announced an increase from 550 to 650 million euros in fundings for further works in Linea1 stations: two more exits will be realized at Piazza del Gesu' and at Largo Montecalvario (connected by means of tapis roulants to stations Dante and Toledo respectively), and a museum will be created in station Municipio (see news #1 and news #2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

December 14, 2002: second tunnel of section Vanvitelli - Dante has entered service, with end of shuttle service on the section, and end of compulsory train change at Vanvitelli, (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

January 9, 2004: The ancient harbour of Neapolis (2nd century after Christ) has been re-descovered thanks to works for station Municipio of Linea 1. Among many other things, archaeologists have found a 13-metre long boat, vases coming from Middle East, amphoras filled with oil, wine and perfumes. The Museum of History of the City should be placed in the station Municipio.

January 11, 2004: Comune di Napoli asks Ministry for Infrastructures direct management for construction of Centro Direzionale - Aeroporto section of Linea 1 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

January 16, 2004: more and more archaeological discoveries are being made during excavations for stations Municipio and Duomo (Linea 1): Naples vice-Mayor Rocco Papa announces that protected paths are being considered to allow public visits to working areas (see news 1 and news 2 - in Italian - Il Mattino).

January 21, 2004: Comune di Napoli approves the preliminary project for Piscinola - Aeroporto section (Linea 1). Area previously occupied by old Alifana line tracks is expected to become a pedestrian path with gardens and squares (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

March 19, 2004: station Duomo (Linea 1) will be built wider than planned, and will contain all old Greek-Roman objects being found, among which the whole Gymnasium (the temple of Neapolitan Olympic Games) (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

June 4, 2004: pedestrian underpass connecting station Museo (Linea 1) and National Archaeological Museum is ready to enter service. Its description can be found in the news - in Italian - from Il Mattino.

March 23, 2005: tunnel connecting station Museo (Linea 1) and National Archaeological Museum has been opened to service. On same day restyling at station Vanvitelli (Linea 1) has been made available to passengers. This latter comprises, among other improvements, many modern-art workpieces collected and exhibited under the supervision of Achille Bonito Oliva.

May 22, 2005: a second exit for station Toledo (Linea 1) has been announced. It will be located at Trinità degli Spagnoli, thus serving Quartieri Spagnoli ("Spanish district") (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

July 17, 2005: section from Piscinola - Scampia to Mugnano of Metrocampania Nord-Est (formerly Alifana) has entered service. Announced by end 2007 service extension to Aversa. This line under construction is already integrated with Linea 1. Furthermore, announced by end 2008 start of service for section Piscinola - Scampia - Garibaldi, which will allow to close Linea 1 loop. Finally, announced by 2009 linking at Piscinola - Scampia so that Metrocampania Nord-Est trains will be able to directly use Linea 1 tracks (see news #1 and news #2 - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

September 30, 2005: works to create a new exit (within Cardarelli Hospital) at station Policlinico (Linea 1) will start in October: six months have been scheduled for completion (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

December 3, 2005: CIPE has funded 323 million euros for Naples metro works: 42.2 millions for Montesanto station (Linea 5 and Linea 7), 61.1 millions for Cilea - Quattro Giornate interchange node (Linea 1, Linea 5 and Linea 7) to complete by 2010, 119.7 millions for the section Capodichino - Centro Direzionale (Linea 1) and 100 millions for the section San Pasquale - Municipio (Linea 6) (see news and table - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

January 13, 2006: in end January the second exit of station Montedonzelli (Linea 1) opens (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

February 4, 2006: second exit of station Montedonzelli (Linea 1) has started service (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

July 9, 2006: the section Piscinola - Capodichino of Linea 1 has been let out on contract. Expected completion time: 3 and a half years (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).


Coming soon


2006: opening of Piazza del Gesu' exit, connected to station Dante (Linea1) through escalators and tapis roulants.
