Information page about the  La Maddalena's archipelago and the North Sardinia Harbours.

The archipelago of La Maddalena have a population of 12.000 civil peoples but they are too about 4000 militares people because in La Maddalena living about 2.000 employes of the U.S.A. Navy. In Santo S Stefano island  in fact they are a bigh arbour for atomic submarines of the U.S.A. Navy.    Other 2.000 peoples are employes of the Italian Navy.

La Maddalena island is the only habited  island of the archipelago consisting in 7 large islands and about 20 islets on the Noth-East coast of Sardinia, in the strait of Bonifacio. (go to see nautic card)

The archipelago extendes for about 200 km (110 miles) of coast, with many well shelterd small beaches of white sand, such as "Cala Corsara" (go see the photos) on the island of Spargi and the famous in the world "Pink Beach" on the island of Budelli(go to see the photos).

The mediterranean maquis dominated the scenery, as well the granite sculptured by the wind. Sring showa all is splendorin the local flora with numerous rares species, typical of the islands in the straits. Now La Maddalena   archipelago is a national park, but non accepted by the La Maddalena dwellwers.

Wide meadows of poseidonian, a type of sea grass, foster the luxurious underwater life, striking in a variety of colors. ( go to see the coupons into the nature page)

Memory of the past the XVIII century fortresses and the late XIX century powerfull batteries will overwhelm the visitors with their magnitude.

The museum of Giuseppe Garibaldi in the Caprera Island was the old residence and it treasures the hero's life memories.

The naval museum (in La Maddalena), among the most important in Italy. displays a variety of object and large clay jars, known as amphoras, rescued from the water along the coast of Spargi, remains of a Roman ship which wrecked at the beginning of the II Centuty A.C.

Useful information :

Five ferryes connects La Maddalena to Sardinia (24 hours service). La Maddalena and Caprera are connected by buses and taxis. All the other islands can be reached by boat. The Hospital, equipped with an Hyperbaric room, and three pharmacies guaranted medical assistance. ( see  too  the  pages- Wear -and - How - ) and see the Gallura's Harbours down.

LA MADDALENA - CALA GAVETTA - 41°12'N 9°24'E
It is the harbour of the urban centre with few places for  boats especially in the high season. All the principal mooring services on the quay:fuel,mechanic,ice etc. (Public Harbour)

LA MADDALENA - PORTO MASSIMO - 41°15'N 9°25'E
This private marina, a few kilometres from the urban
centre, offers good berths and modern services. No Fuel available

PALAU - 41°10'N 9°23'E
Modern marina for 300 boats with all mooring services. Main marina for people visiting the Archipelago of
La Maddalena. Exposed to the north-east wind.

CANNIGIONE - 41°07'N 9°26'E
Situated at the end of the long and sheltered Gulf of Arzachena It is formed by several movable quays
as well as the main masonry quay. Two Fuel pumps, good shelter for more than 500 boats.

S. TERESA DI GALLURA - 41°14'N 9°11'E
Characteristic port built in a fjord in the village . Well sheltered, main port for Bonifacio. 300 Berths. All
principal mooring services.

CALA BITTA - 41°07'N 9°28'E
Little harbour, built recently, about 200 berths, No Fuel, exposed to the Mistral and North winds.

POLTU QUATU - 41°08'N 9°29'E
A marina, recently built, very busy during the summer, 500 berths, all mooring services. Sheltered from
all winds, it is situated in a natural fjord.

PORTO CERVO - 41°08'N 9°32'E
This is the busiest and best equipped port in Sardinia and
is situated on the famous Costa Smeralda. 700 berths,
full and extensive mooring services. The most important
sailing regattas and speed boat racing.

PORTISCO - 41°01'N 9°31'E
This modern equipped private marina is situated at the
entrance to the sheltered fjord of Cugnana, 300 berths,
most important mooring services.

The Gallura's Coast ( North Sardinia - Italy )
PORTO ROTONDO - 41°02'N 9°32'E
Another busy port used by boats from all over the world. Around the port the holiday centre of Porto
Rotondo has evolved, with its hotels, restaurants and night clubs. 634 berths.

PORTO ORO DI PALUMBALZA - 41°01'N 9°33'E
Private port with only 30 berths, well sheltered in the Gulf
of Marinella. No Fuel, various mooring services.

PUNTA MARANA - 41°01'N 9°34'E
Situated in the Gulf of Marinella, 300 berths, for boats up
to 12 metres. All the mooring services are available in
this very sheltered marina.

GOLFO ARANCI - 40°59'N 9°37'E
A quite harbour, 100 berths, situated in the sheltered gulf of Golfo Aranci. Essential services and Fuel
for fishing boats only.

BAIA CADDINAS - 41°00'N 9°36'E
Private marina with all the most important mooring services. Fuel at the entrance to the port. Better to
book berths in advance during the high season.

OLBIA - 40°55'N 9°31'E
Inside the large port there are several berths such as the quays of the Yacht Club, Nautisarda, Punta

PUNTALDIA - 40°48'N 9°41'E
Tourist port, recently built, 385 berths, most important mooring services.

PORTO OTTIOLU - 40°44'N 9°42'E
Modern marina, 405 berths, all mooring services. Very comfortable tourist accommodation and
amenities have been built around the port.

LA CALETTA DI SINISCOLA - 40°36'N 9°45'E
In this large port, which once was only for fishermen, berthing for 100 tourist boats, a nautical club has
been built. Only Diesel Oil available.

CALA GONONE - 40°17'N 9°38'E
Very busy small port used by large boats that take tourists on day trips and fishing boats. Hard to get
a berth in the high season. No Fuel.
