Hm Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales Welcome to the Prison Service website for England and Wales, which went live in May 1999. I am encouraged by the level of interest in our site which currently runs at nearly 34,000 hits per month. The independent Prisons Inspectorate was established in 1980 in line with a recommendation of the Committee of Enquiry into the United Kingdom Prison Services (the May Committee).

HM Prison Service UK Prison is an unfortunate reality for over 60,000of our citizens who are currently in our care. Over 40,000 staff exist to ensure that those sent to us by the courts are looked after with fairness and humanity while maintaining the highest standards of security possible for the general public
