Music and singing is the joy of life

The interview took place in school with a parent of an 11-year-old child.

Tell me about your family.
Mi parli della sua famiglia.

I married in 1981 to a cousin, His father was killed in Turkey, and his family wanted that he should come to Sweden. It wasn't love between us from the beginning, but a chance for him to come and be allowed to stay in Sweden. He was nice and kind and we made a family. We have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, The eldest and youngest are girls. They are 17,13, 12 and 6 years old.

Era carino e gentile e abbiamo messo su famiglia. Abbiamo quattro figli, due maschi e due femmine. La maggiore e la minore sono femmine. Hanno 17, 13, 12 e 6 anni.

My husband has a restaurant, it gives him a lot of job, and because of that he has missed the growing up of our elder children. But he has more time now to spend with our youngest daughter. The family has become closer now and he always is off every other weekend.

We have lived in a block of flats for 15 years, but the last 2 years we have lived in a house of our own. We are getting on pretty well. Now we have more time for our family. When we lived in the apartment, there was always a lot a other children, who liked to be there. So, there were not only our children listening at my story-telling and whom I helped with their homework. Itís more peaceful now. I think it's enough with my own children.

Tell me something about your adolescence?
Mi racconti qualcosa della tua adolescenza?

"I was born in Lebanon and lived there with my family till I was 12. Then the war broke out. My father wanted to move from the country. He didnít sympathise with any political party, and he was afraid that he and his sons should be forced to participate in the war. He used to be a gardener and worked in the castle of the French ambassador. When the war broke out, my father was offered to accompany the ambassador to France, of course with the whole family, but my mother had a brother in Sweden, whom she hadnít seen in 13 years, so she wanted to go there. This was in 1976.

When we left Lebanon, we couldnít get neither our money nor our passports or visas, so my father bought false passports with Muslim names on them and we borrowed money from an aunt so we could start our long trip to Sweden. At the entrance to Sweden my father told the officers how it really was, and in 2 weeks we had our permit de sojourn. At the beginning we lived in a suburb of Stockholm. We got a flat and we could borrow money to buy furniture, things for the household and clothes.

In 4 months I learnt so much Swedish that I could manage pretty well. I could also help people from my own country with the language. In school we all went to a special class. The teacher talked French, so did I, so I thought that I learnt Swedish very fast, and that was very important to me. I didn't think it was that difficult!

My mother spent almost all the time at home taking care of the household and all the children, so she never learnt Swedish. My father wanted to "earn what he should eat", so he went to the employment exchange asking for job. He got a job as a gardener. I also started to work, and so did some of my brothers. We had borrowed money and my father wanted to give it back as soon as possible, so I worked at the airport in weekends and holidays at the same time I attended school. Every member of the family really did its best. I have had stern but loving parents. We spent a lot of time together. My mother was very tired almost all the time, but I think I have had a very good childhood.

Ne trovò uno come giardiniere. Anch'io e alcunidei miei fratelli iniziammo a lavorare.

After 4 years the family moved to Göthenburg. Brothers to the man, who killed my grandfather, moved to Stockholm, so my father didnít want to stay there. My father wanted to live in a big town, so the whole family moved here. After one year and a half, my future husband got visa to Sweden. My father asked me if I could think of the possibility to marry him. He didnít force me at all, but I felt pity for my cousin, so I said yes. This was the only way for him to stay in Sweden. We had a small wedding-ceremony. My husband didnít have any money, but I had been working for some years, so I had a small amount in the bank. At that time I was 18 years old. I think that Iím happy. Of course it took time to know each other. We had come from different cultures and spoke different dialect. He was grown up in a small village and I in big cities. We don't have many interests in common, but we have learnt to give and take.

All'epoca avevo 18 anni.

Does your husband agree with you concerning the education of your children?

"My husband isnít engaged in their education. That is my business. And he thinks that Iím doing it quite well.

What language do you speak at home?
In che lingua parlate a casa?

"Swedish. I really regret not having spoken Arabic with the children from the beginning. They cannot communicate with our relatives. Itís more difficult to learn Arabic now, but they do really want to!"

Svedese.

Do you speak any other language at home?
Parlate altre lingue a casa?

"I have got a French education, my father worked at the French embassy, but I dont talk French with the children. However, they study French at school."

How often do you visit Lebanon?
Tornate spesso in Libano?

"There are not many relatives left in our country. They live all over the world: USA, Turkey, Australia, Germany, France and Sweden, but I was in Lebanon last summer, but the rest of the family hasnít been there."

In what way are you in touch with your home country?

"I read newspapers, magazines and books. We watch Arabic programs on the telly to get informed of what happens. " Leggo i giornali, riviste e libri.

Which music do you like?
Che musica vi piace?

"We love music all of us. Swedish, Arabic, Turkish, all. We like dancing. My mother used to say: Music and singing is the joy of life." Tutti noi amiamo molto la musica: svedese, araba, turca, tutta. Ci piace ballare.

How old is your eldest daughter?
Quanti anni ha la vostra figlia maggiore?

"She is 17." Ne ha 17.

You were given away in marriage so to say. What do you think of your daughter's future?

"I will never, never accept that kind of life for her. I don't feel sorry for how my life has turned out. My husband has given me everything I wanted. But I miss romance and love, such things that young girls dream of. You know, as a young girl you dream of the great fantastic love. That dream wasnít for me, but I wish that my children will find it. I respect my husband for the life he has given to our children and me and he has really worked hard. But our daughters will choose by themselves. Just one thing: Thatís about the religion. I will never accept a Muslim son in law. It would bring too big problems."

Do you often visit a church?
Andate spesso in Chiesa?

"Yes, I'm very much involved in our Syrian-Orthodox church. Nor my husband or our children visit the church very often, and that's up to them. But at home we always say a prayer at mealtime."

What about your friends?
Cosa mi dice delle vostre amicizie?

"We have many relatives here and we spend a lot of time together. We have also friends from Iran, Greece and Sweden. We have lots of friends." Abbiamo vari parenti qui e passiamo molto tempo insieme.

What about school-system in Sweden and Lebanon, are there any differences?

"We had much more homework in Lebanon, and it was harder in some way. Children had more respect for the teacher, but I think that's how it was in Sweden before, too."

Who brings your children to the dentist or the doctor, when they need to go there?

That's a question of mine. Me ne occupo io.

Have you noticed any difference concerning the character of man-woman in the two countries?

"Not very much. But women get more respect and attendance in Lebanon."

Is there anything you miss in Sweden?

"Warmth! And life at evenings and nights like in Lebanon. People often went out, just to meet. Here families stay at home very much. Unfortunately itís going the same way with us. I don't visit people any longer as I used to do. Perhaps it's because of the climate!"

How do your children spend their time-off?
Come trascorrono il tempo libero i tuoi figli?

'They play football and handball and sometimes they go to our church where we have different kinds of activities."

Are your children getting on well?
Si trovano bene?

"Yes, very well and they never want to move, that's what they say."
Sì, molto. Dicono che non vorrebbero mai andarsene.

What do they think about the future?
Cosa pensano del loro futuro?

"They want to study. Maths, science and data." Vorrebbero studiare matematica, scienze e calcolo.

What about their friends, how do they choose them?
E i loro amici come li scelgono?

"I choose them. You know, I always say that you will be just as the friends you keep company to. I do not care about nationality or class society, I just want them to be well educated."

Do the children do any work at home, like making their beds, washing up and so on?

"Just our elder daughter. We tidy up together and also help with other things, when she has got time. My sons never help at home, they don't even make their beds. Of course they would if I asked them. My husband works so hard at the restaurant, and is seldom at home, but he always cook when we have fish, that's his speciality!"

Thank you very much for coming!
Grazie molto per essere venuta.

You're welcome. Prego, di nulla.
