Sweden -interview n°2

This interview was made without any interpreter in Swedish and taped this is a transcription and translation made by Marie Murray-Pettersson at the nursery school Meteorgatan 52. The first Family interviewed comes from Yugoslavia and became refugees during the war in Bosnia. The family came to Sweden in 1993 and they had a daughter three years old, they had to leave in haste with help from relatives in Sweden. In Bosnia they lived in a city with about 32-33000 people of mixed descent and religion .The town was bombed but not the moor central parts, so this families house still exist but is today lived in by a Serbian family.
The family presented has four members and three are present during this interview. We will call the Family J and the answers will be H if it is the husband and W if it is the wife that is speaking

L'intervista è stata realizzata senza un'interprete in svedese; la trscrizione e la traduzione è stata curata da Marie Murray-Petterson, presso la scuola materna Meteorgaten 52. La famiglia intervistata è originaria della Jugoslavia, sono venuti in Svezia nel 1993 come rifugiati della guerra di Bosnia. Hanno una figlia di tre anni e sono venuti qui con l'aiuto di loro parenti in Svezia. In Bosnia vivevano in una città di 32/33 mila abitanti di diversa origine e religione. La città è stata bombardata ma non nella parte più centrale, così la casa esiste ancora ma oggi è abitata da una famiglia serba.
La famiglia ha 4 membri e tre sono presenti durante l'intervista; noi chiameremo la famiglia J, mentre le risposte saranno precedute da H per il marito e W per la moglie.

Family presentation

H: We are married and have two children 9 and 4 years old. Adisa is born in Bosnia and Ilma is born in Sweden. Noi siamo sposati e abbiamo due bambini di 9 e 4 anni. Adisa è nata in Bosnia e Ilma in Svezia.

W: Grandmother lives here in Bergsjön, grandfather lives in the USA. My husband's brother lives here in Gothenburg with his family. La nonna vive qui a Bergsjön, il nonno vive negli Usa. Il fratello di mio marito vive qui a Goteborg con la sua famiglia.

Family background-storia familiare

H: I worked in the textile-industry as a repairer. Io lavoravo in un'industraia tessile come manutentore.

W: I worked in the wood- industry with furniture and upholstering. We both have 3years of education in our field off work. In Bosnia we lived in the city in our own house. During our free time we liked going to the movies, pick-nicks and swimming. We also had various social activities with friends from work and their families our relatives and other friends. About religion: we are both Muslims. Io lavoravo in una falegnameria, con mobili e arredo. Noi abbiamo avuto entrambi 3 anni di formazione nel nostro settore di lavoro. In Bosnia vivevamo in città in una casa di nostra proprietà. Nel tempo libero andavamo al cinema, facevamo pic nic e andavamo a nuotare. Abbiamo avuto anche diverse attività sociali con gli amici di lavoro e i loro familiari, o con i nostri parenti o altri amici. Riguardo alla religione, siamo entrambi musulmani.

Why did you leave? Perché avete lasciato la Bosnia?

H: We left because of the war with 50-60000 others. A causa della guerra, con altre 50/60 mila persone.

NOTE: After a short discussion in Bosnian within the family the father starts again.

H: I worked during some months here in Gothenburg, my brother lives here. When the war came we received help from him; he paid the trip to Sweden from Bosnia. Io avevo lavorato qualche mese qui a Goteborg r mio fratello viveva qui. Quando è arrivata la guerra lui mi ha aiutato e ha pagato il mio viaggio.

Family relation, contact with relatives in Bosnia and other social contacts.
Rapporti familiari, contatti con gli altri parenti in Bosnia e altri contatti sociali.

W: We meet our relatives at celebrations and holidays. I hope to travel to my brother in Bosnia this summer, and I hope to see my house. Noi incontriamo i nostri parenti in occasione di ricorrenze e di feste. Io spero di visitare mio fratello in Bosnia la prossima estate e spero anche di vedere la mia casa.

Social contacts in Sweden - Rapporti sociali in Svezia.

W: We have contact with the unemployment office; we practise our religion and are members of a Bosnian club. Abbiamo contatto con l'ufficio del lavoro, pratichiamo la nostra religione e facciamo parte di un'associazione di bosniaci.

H: During the times we have had jobs we also had Swedish friends some we still meet together with the families. In questo tempo noi abbiamo avuto diversi lavori e anche diversi amici svedesi, qualche volta ci incontriamo insieme, con le nostre famiglie.

Good and bad in Sweden. Aspetti positivi e negativi della Svezia.

W: Most things are good in Sweden but jobs are hard to find.Molte cose sono buone in Svezia ma è difficile trovare lavoro.

H: I came here when I was 32 years old and have been here for 5.5 years. We are both ready to take any job that we can find. I have worked in several projects (6) and it is hard not to find steady work. Quando sono venuto qui, 5 anni e mezzo fa, avevo 32 anni. Noi siamo entrambi desidorosi di trovare un lavoro ma non riusciamo a trovarlo. Io ho fatto molti lavori diversi ed è duro non trovare un posto stabile.

W: My husband has a lot of educationÉ
Mio marito ha una buona educazione.....

H: It is hard for a younger man we worked in a factory, we were 3000 in my factory and in hers 1200.The situation of not having work makes it hard to plan life. E' duro per un giovane: noi lavoriamo in fabbrica, da me sono 3.000 e da Lei sono 1.200. La situazione di non avere un lavoro rende difficile fare progetti per la vita.

How has social benefits and other help from the community worked.
Quali benefici e altri aiuti ha dal lavoro?

H: All is ok here, but the unemployment is all over Europe, it is hard with work we know butÉ
Qui in Svezia è tutto ok, ma la disoccupazione c'è in tutta Europa, è duro trovare lavoro, lo sappiamo, ma...

School-Swedish how has it worked?
Come funziona la scuola svedese?

W: In school they are pleased with Adisa.
A scuola sono soddisfatti di Adisa.

Are you pleased with school?
E voi siete soddisfatti della scuola?

W: Adisa has her home language ones a week.
Adisa parla una lingua a scuola e un'altra a casa.

Adisa: School is ok.
La scuola va bene.

Are you satisfied with the pre-school?
Sei soddisfatta anche del pre-scuola?

W: The rule of 3 hours a day during unemployment is not good. We wait for work all the time, but I do not know when. La regola di tre ore al giorno durante la disoccupazione non è buona. Noi cerchiamo lavoro per tutto il tempo e non so fino a quando.

H: Now she has work, and I do not, we take turns. We are willing to pay so that Ilma can stay at least 5 hours a day. Ora lei ha un lavoro e io no: facciamo a turno. Noi siamo disposti a pagare così che Ilma possa restare fino a 5 ore al giorno.

W: We have problems with the social assistantÉ
Noi abbiamo problemi con l'assistenza sociale.

H: Can I tellÉ When she had Ilma she had her maternity-pay and I declared all I received from the social welfare now when we have unemployment-benefits we have to pay back 11000 SKr. We had not understood that we had to declare a change in income. We did not understand the language, and was misinformed. (The money was aid towards the rent of the apartment.) If we had received moor money it would have been ok and we just had to pay back. But we had declared income. Three times and was told that everything was in order.

Posso raccontare io. Quando lei ha avuto Ilma aveva l'assegno di maternità e io dichiaravo e ricevevo dall'assistenza sociale; ora quando prendiamo gli assegni di disoccupazione dobbiamo restituire 1100 corone svedesi. Non avevamo capito che dovevamo dichiarare la modifica di reddito. Non capimmo a causa della lingua e non c'era informazione. (Il denaro era servitto per pagare l'affitto di casa). Se noi abbiamo ricevuto più denaro dovrebbe essere ok e invece dobbiamo restituirlo. Ma noi abbiamo dichiarato i nostri redditi. Per tre volte sono andato e ogni volta mi è stato detto che ogni cosa era in regola.

Have you in any other way been treated badly or with intolerance?
Siete mai stati trattati in cattivo modo o con intolleranza?

W: We do not know what is the problemÉ
Non conosciamo questo tipo di problemi...

H: If we know that it is hard to get a job in Sweden, when.... The war came it did not matter. I had worked for 8 years when I came here and that is the only thing I want Just a job and no welfare benefits. The social assistant questioned the buy of a television for 6000 SKr, it was a normal TV nothing extra. She also asked why I have a car; I have a car worth about 20000 SKr not a 100000 SKr. I feel those welfare offices in different areas and different social assistants have different rules and policies. Ex. in a town called Stenungsund a fellow Bosnian has a car worth 100000 and was not questioned. In my case I rather buy cheap clothes to be able to have the car. We have also had problems with getting taxi expenses paid when we have had to take the children to hospital.

Sappiamo solo che è difficile trovare lavoro in Svezia, quando è scoppiata la guerra questo non importava. Io lavoravo da 8 anni quando sono arrivato qui e la sola cosa che volevo era un lavoro e non gli assegni di disoccupato. L'Assistente sociale voleva sapere dell'acquisto di una televisione per 6 mila corone, una tv normale, senza nulla di particolare. Mi ha chiesto anche perché avevo un automobile. Io ho un automobile che vale circa 20 mila, e non 100 mila corone. Io credo che questi uffici di assistenza si comportino in modo diverso nelle diverse realtà. Ad esempio, in una città chiamata Stenunsund un mio amico ha un auto di 100 mila corone e non è stato interrogato. Per ciò che mi riguarda io piuttosto compro vestiti economici pur di avere un automobile. Noi abbiamo anche problemi anche con le spese di taxi quando dobbiamo andare ad accompagnare i bambini in ospedale.

W: We have to pay everything on our welfare.
Dobbiamo pagare tutto con il nostro assegno.

H: Éfor others they pay everything. ....
ad altri pagano ogni cosa.

W: Compared with other Bosnians in the same situation they fell that the social assistants do not treat all the same. A confronto con gli altri bosniaci nella stessa situazione, essi pensano che gli assistenti sociali non trattano tutti allo stesso modo.

H: Maybe it is because Gothenburg is a big cityÉ Some months ago I went to a smaller place to see if I could find workÉ Forse perché Goberg è una grande città ...... Qualche mese fa sono andato in un'altra città per vedere se trovavo lavoro... ma non ho avuto successo.

W: He always talks about jobs. (smiling).
Lui parla sempre di lavoro (sorridendo)

H: She thinks I talk to personnel.
Lei pensa che io ne faccio un caso personale.

How do you see the future?
Come vedete il vostro futuro?

W: We want to go back.
Voglio tornare in Bosnia.

H: This is difficult question, our city is occupied.
Però questo è difficile, la nostra città è occupata.

W. We have to wait.
Dobbiamo aspettare.

H: It is not only to get the key back for my house. What about work and what will we eat? In Bosnia there are no welfare. Non è solo per la casa ma anche per il lavoro: come faremo a mangiare? In Bosnia non c'è assistenza.

W: We want to go back, we just do not know when 1-5 years we will continue to look for work in Bosnia. Bosnia is much better; all is better the climate, work it is home. Noi vogliamo tornare ma non sappiamo quando, 1 o 5 anni, continueremo a cercare per un lavorare in Bosnia. In Bosnia tutto è meglio.
