Sweden -interview n°5 made by Longina Wicekowski- Bergsjöskolan

The interviewed is a man from Somalia in Africa and he is interviewed by Longina Wicekowski, at the pre-school Meteorgatan 52 in Bergsjön 990420.There was no interpreter present and the interview was made in Swedish and taped. This is a transcription and a translation.

This family comes from Somalia and the father came in 1990 and his wife came in 1992.Both of them are refugees of war. The escape was not planned but both received help from relatives to pay the trip to Sweden.

Presentazione

Father: We are seven in the family, and we are/or was married but my wife wanted to divorce me, but was not allowed. We lived separated for a time here in Sweden, but now we want to be together again. We have three children of our own and one on the way. All children are born here in Sweden. The two foster-children who live with us where born in Somalia. We live here in Bergsjön and we have no relatives here in Sweden.
Padre: Siamo sette personein famiglia. Noi siamo (o eravamo) sposati ma mia moglie voleva divorziare da me, ma non è stato possibile. Noi vivemmo separati per diverso tempo qui in Svezia, ma orta vogliamo tornare di nuovo insieme. Abbiamo tre bambini nostri e uno in arrivo. Tutti sono nati qui in Svezia. I due figli adottivi che vivono con noi sono nati in Somalia. Noi viviamo qui a Bergsjon e non abbiamo parenti in Svezia.

I was a soccer-player and we both have high-school education. We lived in a small town and we both lived with our own families. In my spare-time I played soccer and saw my friends, my wife lived with her relatives and friends. We are both Muslims as 90% of the people of Somalia.
Io ero un giocatore di calcio ed entrambi avevamo frequentato le scuole superiori. Vivevamo in una piccola città, ognuno con la sua famiglia. Nel tempo libero giocavo al calcio e incontravo i miei amici, mia moglie viveva con i suoi parenti e i suoi amici. Siamo entrambi musulmani, come il 90% dei somali.

We left because of the war with other Somali people. I received help from my uncle and my father to pay the trip, and came to Sweden directly. My wife had help from her relatives and came to Sweden two years after me.
Siamo partiti a causa della guerra civile, io sono stato aiutato da mio zio e mio padre per pagarmi il viaggio, e sono venuto direttamente in Svezia. Mia moglie è stata aiutata dai suoi parenti e venne in Svezia due anni dopo.

We have relatives in Somalia. In the beginning it was difficult to have any contact. They had no telephone, but now it is easier because of the satellites now you can reach them much quicker and talk to them. I hope to be able to go back and visit.
I would not have been here if I could afford a good life in Somalia, and if there was peace in my country. I always think about escape from here. Would go back if conditions where better in Somalia. But I say this because I am in Sweden.

Noi abbiamo parenti in Somalia. All'inizio era difficile avere contatti. Loro non avevano telefono, ma ora è più facile perché con il satellite si può raggiungerli più spesso e parlare. Io spero di poter tornare per visitarli. Io non sarei venuto qui se potevo fare una buona vita in Somalia, se ci fosse stata la pace. Penso sempre alla mia fuga. Vorrei tornare se le condizioni fossero migliori. Ma io dico questo perché mi trovo in Svezia.

Family's social contacts in Sweden

We have a Somalien club here in Gothenburg and we use it when we have big parties our other special events. Mostly I socialise with my countrymen but during the time we went to school we had Swedish friends.
Noi abbiamo un circolo di somali qui a Goteborg e lo frequentiamo quando abbiamo incontri importanti o altri eventi speciali. Più di tutto io mi incontro con i miei coincittadini ma durante il periodo in cui abbiamo frequentato la scuola avevamo anche amici svedesi.

Are you satisfied with the pre-school/school?

Yes very, it works well, the pre-school's teachers has helped me a lot with everything.
Sì molto, funziona bene, gli insegnanti della pre-scuola mi hanno aiutato molto in tutte le cose.

Do you feel that it works well here in Sweden?
Ti sembra che vanno bene le cose qui in Svezia?

When we came to Sweden it was much better, you received help in many ways. But now maybe they are tiered of immigrants it's not as before. Everything is different. The biggest problem for us was to find an apartment My wife has big difficulties finding one, she wants a bigger one because she has five children and we live in a three-room apartment. My wife had a lot of fights with the social-welfare office about the apartment. She assumes that the apartment didn't become hers on account of skin-colour. It has changed a lot here in Sweden.
Quando venimmo in Svezia le cose andavano meglio: tu ricevevi aiuto in molti modi. Ma ora forse sono pieni di immigrati e non è come prima, è tutto diverso. Il problema maggiore per noi è trovare un appartamento. Mia moglie ha grosse difficoltà nel trovarne uno. Lei ne vuole uno più grande perché ha cinque bambini e noi viviamo in un appartamento con tre stanze. Mia moglie si è impegnata molto con l'ufficio di assistenza per l'appartamento. Lei pensa che non trova l'appartamento a causa del colore della pelle. E' cambiato molto qui in Svezia.

Except this have you been treated fair?
Ad eccezione di questo, siete stati trattai in modo giusto?

I believe that they separate people in Sweden. It is clear that there are two kinds of people in Sweden, a white and then black-heads as it's said. A black-head doesn't live like a white if he has right's to live at all. It is only white people that counts and this feeling is present everywhere. This makes me sad.
Work is not so easy to find if you are black, just showing your-self to the employer makes them say tank you for coming. I believe that it is hard anywhere in the world for immigrants not only in Sweden.

Io credo che qui in Svezia si separi la gente. E' chiaro che ci sono due tipi di persone in Svezia, uno bianco e le "teste nere", come si dice. Una "testa nera" non vive come un bianco sebbene ha il diritto di vivere come tutti. Solo i bianchi contano e questo sentimento è presente in ognuno. Ciò mi rende triste. Non è facile trovare lavoro se sei nero, appena ti presenti ti dicono grazie. Io credo che sia duro ovunque nel mondo per gli immigrtrai, e non solo in Svezia.

How do you see the future?
Cosa pensi del tuo futuro?

My life is here but my heart is in my country, in Somalia I would like to go back. My children are the most important, if I become a Swedish citizen I would like to go back to my country and visit I hope it will happen.
La mia vita è qui ma il mio cuore è nel mio paese in Somalia, dove vorrei tornare. I miei figli sono molto importanti, se io divento un cittadino svedese vorrei tornare al mio paese e visitarlo, spero che accada.

A Swede says "Borta bra men hemma bäst". (this means that away from home is good but home is better) - Un detto svedese dice " Borta bra men hemma bäst", intendendo che via da casa è bene ma a casa è meglio.
