Terraform proves what some people have thought to be true all along: Steve Albini is an incredible guitarist. Above and beyond his completely unique guitar tone, he coaxes sounds out of the instrument that are all at once disturbingly mechanical, otherworldly and uniformly brilliant. He accomplishes all this with no guitar overdubbing or studio effects trickery either, playing the guitar like every resonating, clicking and sound-creating part is a means of operating the instrument.

Terraform's 8 skeletal songs are rumbling frameworks for Albini's clanging, brittle guitar mayhem. "Didn't We Deserve A Look At You The Way You Really Are" begins the recording on a wonderfully annoying note. This song goes on forever. At times, I honestly thought my turntable had stuck . . . only to be startled back into reality by the Chicago trio rising to the occasion with a burst of perfectly-timed, rocking noise. "House Full Of Garbage" works in much the same way, driving home its bass-navigated riff until your head begins to feel as if it's filling up with cannonballs. Both this track and the aforementioned feel like the centerpieces of the album, but the rest still document Shellac at their peak. "Canada" is waterproof-tight and blistering and "Rush Job" is one of the weirdest tunes that the band's ever recorded.

If you've been waiting a while for Terraform, believe me, you'll feel it's been worth it after one listen.

Terraform prova quello che alcune persone hanno creduto essere vero per tutto questo tempo: Steve Albini è un incredibile chitarrista. Le 8 scheletriche tracce di Terraform sono rimbombanti intelaiature per lo sferragliare metallico di Albini. "Didn't We Deserve A Look At You The Way You Really Are" inizia il disco con una meravigliosamente fastidiosa sessione. Questa canzone va avanti all'infinito. Al momento, ho onestamente pensato che il mio giradischi si fosse inceppato... successivamente il trio di Chicago mi ha sorpreso riportandomi ad un eccellente noise rock tecnicamente ineccepibile. "House Full Of Garbage" va nella stessa direzione, le pesanti note di basso danno l'impressione di essere bombardati da palle di cannone. Sia questa traccia che l'ouverture del disco prima menzionata rappresentano i punti principali dell'album, ma il resto mostra ancora gli Shellac al top della loro forma. "Canada" ha un ritmo serrato e devastante, mentre "Rush Job" è una delle più strane canzoni che la band abbia mai registrato. Se stavate aspettando Terraform da molto tempo, credemi e pazientate, si rivelerà migliore ascolto dopo ascolto.
