The castle

The Castle dominates with his stately size the splendid square of Santa Severina. It has a square "mastio" with four cilindric towers at the corners and is flanked by four bastions, jutting in correspondence of towers.

The Castle's building is ascribed to Roberto il Guiscardo (century XI), who, yet, intervened on a pre - existent Bizantine fortification.

In '500 the Castle underwent a noteworthy restoration by Andrea Carafa and his descendants.

In the following centuries there were other modifications.

A long operation of restoration (concluded in 1998) has brought again to light the original set - up of the monument.

There have been lots or archeologic finds: necropolis, frescos, silos, furnaces, cisterns, coins, tools.
