Syllabus for Study of Applied Tuba and Euphonium
(to be used in conjunction with the current edition of
Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide)

(revised Fall 1998)

All students are required to attend a weekly lesson and participate in the UNITUBA Ensemble. Any lessons missed by the student without prior arrangement with Dr. Funderburk will not normally be eligible for 'make-up'. More than 1 missed lesson per semester WILL result in a grade reduction of 1/2 letter grade per additional absence for the semester.

At the end of each semester, the student will meet with Dr. Funderburk to determine what solos and etudes are to be purchased for the coming semester. Students are responsible to obtain these materials BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT SEMESTER. Failure to obtain the correct materials is considered the same as failure to have the required text for a course and may result in grade reduction.

Freshman, Semester 1

All major Key Studies must be memorized. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

2 to 3 Etudes will be assigned weekly from books listed in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide under Freshman Year Study Materials.

A solo from the list of Solos in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide (or one of comparable musical and technical content approved by Dr. Funderburk) will be prepared and performed with accompaniment as appropriate at the end of the semester Brass Juries.

Freshman, Semester 2

All Harmonic and Melodic Key Studies must be memorized. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

'II, V7, I' Progressions must be memorized. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO OWN THEIR OWN INSTRUMENT BY THE JUNIOR YEAR.

Students are responsible for all Key Studies, Blues, Pentatonic, Mixolydian Scales and II, V7, I Progressions. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

Senior Music Education,
Semester which is not selected for student teaching

Students are responsible for all Key Studies, Blues, Pentatonic, Mixolydian Scales and II, V7, I Progressions. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

1 to 2 Etudes will be assigned weekly from books listed in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide under Senior Year Study Materials. In addition, students will begin work on orchestral and/or Band excerpts form the books listed in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide.

At least 1/2 Recital is required to be performed. Solos from the list of Solos in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide (or some which are of comparable musical and technical content approved by Dr. Funderburk) will be prepared and performed with accompaniment.

A review of teaching materials for Tuba and Euphonium will be conducted. The student will demonstrate and understanding of these materials by preparing a course of study for each instrument from beginner through high school level including etude materials and solo materials.

Senior, BM major, Semester 1

Students are responsible for all Key Studies, Blues, Pentatonic, Mixolydian Scales and II, V7, I Progressions. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.

2 to 4 Etudes will be assigned weekly from books listed in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide under Senior Year Study Materials. In addition, students will begin work on orchestral and/or Band excerpts form the books listed in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide.

A full Recital is required to be performed. Solos from the list of Solos in the Tuba and Euphonium Reference Guide (or some which are of comparable musical and technical content approved by Dr. Funderburk) will be prepared and performed with accompaniment.

In addition, audition tapes for Job placement and/or Graduate School Placement will be prepared.

Senior, BM major, Semester 2

Students are responsible for all Key Studies, Blues, Pentatonic, Mixolydian Scales and II, V7, I Progressions. A test will be given during a lesson time at the end of the semester. The student will randomly draw 6-8 sheets from a container. The papers will have names of key studies to be performed. The key studies must be passed in order to receive a grade for the semester. ALL KEY STUDIES ARE ALWAYS ELIGIBLE FOR THE KEY STUDY TEST.
