Sweden -interview n°4 made by Kerstin Holmströn - Bergsjöskolan

Interviewed people: an Assyrien mother who has lived in Sweden with her three children for two years.

Interviewer: Tell me about Your family?
Intervistatore: Mi parli della tua famiglia?

When I talk about my family I don´t mean only me and my three children. I also mean my 3 sisters and 3 brothers and their families, my parents, my uncles etc. I can tell You my relatives for three and four generations and this is common for us. And in a way we say that all those belong to our family.
Quando parlo della mia famiglia io non intendo solo me e i miei tre figli, ma anche le mie 3 sorelle e 3 fratelli e le loro famiglie, i miei genitori, i miei zii, ecc. I posso raccontare dei miei parenti per tre o quattro generazioni, questo è normale per noi, in questo modo noi parliamo di tutti i componenti della nostra famiglia.

How do You live?
Come vivete?

I live in a house with many appartements.My appartement has three rooms and a kitchen.
In una casa con molti appartamenti. Il mio ha tre stanze e una cucina.

Whom do you live together with?
Con chi vivi insieme?

I live together with my three children, a girl 12 years old and two boys 10 and 9 years old. My father lives close to me but in another appartement. My mother died recently. Io vivo con i miei tre figli, una ragazza di 12 anni e due ragazzi di 10 e 9 anni. Mio padre vive in un altro appartamento vicino, mia madre è morta di recente.

What are You doing for living?
Cosa fai nella vita?

I am studying. Still I am studying Swedish but later on I want to study other subjects.
Io studio, per ora solo lo svedese ma in seguito vorrei studiare altre materie.

Tell me about Your early life.
Parlami della tua vita precedente.

I grew up in Turkey and lived there my first 13 years. We lived in the country and my parents were farmers. The life was hard because we are Assyrian and we were pursued because of that. We spoke Assyrian language at home but in school we had to speak Turkish. Because of the problems about being Assyrian we moved to Germany. There my parents never were able to get a job.... I went to school and in my class I was the only foreigner. In the beginning I was very shy and quiet. I was also a little bit afraid because I thought that the teachers would be as hard as in Turkey. In Turkey You often got punnished if You couldn´t answer correct or did something wrong. After a while I saw that it was not like that in Germany and I could relax and then I learned German rather fast. I liked the school in Germany very much.

Io sono cresciuta in Turchia e ho vissuto là fino all'età di 13 anni. Vivevamo in campagna, i miei genitori erano contadini. La vita era dura perchè eravamo siriani e eravamo perseguitati per questo. Noi parlavamo siriano a casa ma a scuola dovevamo parlare turco. A causa di questi problemi decidemmo di trasferirci in Germania. Lì i miei genitori non sono mai riusciti a trovare lavoro. Io andai a scuola e nella mia classe ero l'unica straniera. All'inizio ero molto timida e silenziosa. Avevo anche un po' di paura perchè temevo che gli insegnanti fossero duri come in Turchia, che spesso ti punivano se non sapevi rispondere correttamente o se facevi qualcosa di sbagliato. Poi ho visto che che in Germania non era così e mi sono sentita più tranquilla e ho anche imparato il tedesco molto rapidamente. Mi piaceva molto la scuola in Germania.

When and where did You get married?
Quando e dove ti sei sposata?

As soon as I had finnished school I got married to a German man in Germany. We got three children, all born in Germany, 1987, 1989 and 1990.
Appena conclusa la scuola mi sono sposata in Germania con un tedesco; ora abbiamo tre bambini, tutte e tre nati in Germania, 1987, 1989 e nel 1990.

Which language did You speak with Your children?
Quale lingua parlavi con i tuoi bambini?

I was at home with my children and then we spoke Assyrian. With my husband they spoke German but because he had long days at work they spoke Assyrian most the first years. Then they of course spoke German with their friends and at school. So when they got a little older German was the main language for them.
Io ero a casa con i miei bambini e così parlavamo siriano. Con mio marito parlavano tedesco, anche perché avevano più tempo, parlavano siriano meglio il primo anno. Con i loro amici e a scuola parlavano tedesco. Così quando diventarono più grandi la loro lingua divenne il tedesco.

Why did You leave Germany?
Perché avete lasciato la Germania?

I got devorsed from my husband and we wanted to move far away from him.
Io ho divorziato da mio marito e così volevamo allontanarci da lui.

Why did You choose Sweden?
Perché avete scelto la Svezia?

I had already two sisters in Sweden. I went to them first to see how I felt about Sweden and I found it nice and thought that it could be good here for the children. The language and the way of living is not so different between Germany and Sweden. I also thought that my children should feel safe here, far away from their father.
Due mie sorelle abitavano già in Svezia; dapprima andai da loro per conoscere come si viveva in Svezia, mi piacque e penasi che poteva andare bene vivere qui con i bambini. La lingua e il modo di vivere non era troppo diverso tra Svezia e Germania; pernsai che i miei bambini potessero sentirsi bene qui, lontani dal loro padre.

How did You travel to Sweden?
Come sei arrivata?

We came with train together with a brother and my parents.
In treno, con mio fratello e i miei genitori.

Were there any problems?
Ci furono problemi?

No. Because of the Common Market we had no problems to get the permission to stay.
No, perché con il mercato comune non ci sono propblemi per il permesso di soggiorno.

How did You learn Swedish?
Come hai imparato lo svedese?

First I went to SFI, "Swedish for Immigrants" and as soon as I knew a little Swedish I decided to manage on my own. I didn´t want an interpreter if it wasn´t necessary. I have no Swedish nabours so I have to take every chance I get to use my Swedish at school, in the shops at the dentist etc.
All'inizio frequentai lo "Svedese per immigrati" e appena imparai un po' di svedese decisi di continuare da sola. Non volevo un'interprete se non era necessario. Io non avevo ..... così dovevo approfittare di qualsiasi occasione per usare lo svedese a scuola, al negozio, dal dentistra, ecc.?

What language do You speak at home with Your children?
Quale lingua parli ora a casa con i tuoi figli?

I speak German with my children at home, but when we are together with my father, my sisters and other relatives we speak Assyrian.
Parlo tedesco, ma quando siamo con mio padre, le mie sorelle o gli altri parenti noi parliamo siriano.

Do You speak any other languages?
Parli anche altre lingue?

I know a little Turkish and English.
Io consoco un po' di turco e un po' di inglese.

Have You visited Turkey or Germany since You left those countries?
Hai più visitato la Turchia o la Germania, da quando hai lasciato questi paesi?

I have never gone to Turkey after I left the country but some of my relatives have been there a few times. Now we don´t have many relatives left back there.
I havn´t been in Germany either but this summer I hope to go there together with my children. I have brothers and sisters and other relatives there and we will visit some of them.
Non sono mai tornata in Turchia, ci sono stati qualche volta alcuni dei miei parenti. Ora non abbiamo più molti parenti rismati là. Non sono più stata nemlmeno in germania ma spero di andarci la prossima estate con i miei figli. Io ho fratelli e sorelle là e voglio andare a visitarli.

Have You got new friends here in Sweden?
Hai qualche nuovo amico qui in Svezia?

Mostly I am together with my big family but through my studies I have got some friends. They are from different countries. I have no Swedish friends because where I live there are almost no Swedish people living.
Per la maggiorparte del tempo io sto con la mia grande famiglia, ma grazie anche ai miei studi io ho qualche amico, di paesi diversi. Non ho amici svedesi perché dove vivo ci abitano pochi svedesi.

What religion do Yoy belong to?
Di che religione sei diventata?

We are Christian and we often go to the church. For us the religion is important. My children also belong to a junior group at the church.
Siamo cristiano e spesso andiamo in chiesa; per noi la religione è importante. I miei figli frequentano un gruppo di giovani presso la chiesa.

DO Your children get lessons in German or Assyrian at school?
I tuoi figli prendono lezioni di tedesco o di siriano a scuola?

Yes. First they got lessons in German but now the get lessons in Assyrian.
Sì. All'inizio prendevano lezioni di tedesco ma ora seguono lezioni di siriano.

Do the children join any union or club?
I tuoi figli frequentano qualche circolo o club?

One of my boys is playing football in a footbollclub here in Bergsjön. Then, as I said before, they go to this junior group at church.
Uno dei miei ragazzi gioca a pallone in una squadra di clacio qui a Bergsjön; come dicevo prima, essi vanno a questi circoli di giovani in chiesa.

How do Your children feel about school?
Come si trovano a scuola i tuoi figli?

They like school very much and are doing rather well,both in Swedish and in the other subjects.
Gli piace molto andare a scuola e vanno piuttosto bvene, sia nello svedese che nelle altre materie.

Have they got many new friends?
Hanno molti amici nuovi?

Yes. They got new friends rather easily. Their friends are also from many different countries. Some of the friends are born in Sweden but they have no friends with Swedish parents. That is because there live so few Swedish people here in Bergsjön.
Sì, loro fanno amicizia piuttosto facilmente. Anche i loro amici vengono da paesi differenti; qualcuno è nato in Svezia ma non hanno genitori svedesi. A Bergsjön ci vivono pochi svedesi.
