International Seminar
Local Economic Development 27 June 2000 2.45 – 5.00 p.m
Conference Centre of Varembé(CCV) Room B Rue de Varembé 9 Geneva Room B In an international scenario characterised by increasing poverty, unemployment and a widening opportunity gap between countries, local economic development strategy is a possible way of combating these problems. This is based on the principle that development is not the result of economic variables alone but is also influenced by social factors. The Local Economic Development Agencies, which organise local actors from institutions, private sector and civil society have proved to be an effective tool and have shown that it is possible to reduce the poverty of the most disadvantaged groups and to promote economic development by exploiting local resources to the full. The Agencies operating in developing countries also form part of an International Network and have set up partnerships with analogous local structures in Europe. The Seminar provides a forum to exchange ideas and to expand the network of collaboration. During the seminar the book “The Local Economic Development Agencies” will be presented and distributed. |
