To
restore these floors it is necessary to know both the techniques and
materials used in the period they were built. The main obstacle to the
restoration is represented by the availability of the materials. Today,
some kinds of marble and concrete are no longer available. Originally,
the materials were smoothed by hand. The only tool used was called "orso"
(bear); it consisted of a wooden stick with an abrasive stone at the
end; the rest of the work was manually performed thus resulting in only
partial smoothness. It is thanks to this partial smoothness that today,
during the restoration of old buildings, we find "veneziana" floors
in perfect conditions.
