International Seminar
Training and Innovation for Human Development 27 June 2000 10.00 – 1145
Conference Centre of Varembé(CCV) Room A Rue de Varembé 9 Geneva The world summits of the 1990s led to a general consensus on the need to promote a new kind of development based on people, in order to reduce poverty, conflict and environmental degradation. But there was also a widespread awareness of the great difficulties that this process involved. It is necessary to devise ways of achieving the objectives of the Copenhagen Charter and publicising them at an international level. It is necessary to create a common pool of ideas and experiences. There should be significant training activities for administrators and public and private operators who have an active role in processes of social development. Information campaigns should also promote the necessary changes of attitude in all sectors of society. Universities and research institutes should be brought closer to the actual practices of social development. A study carried out by the United Nations and the universities of numerous countries (Algeria, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, France, Italy, Morocco, Mozambique and Tunisia) indicated that these themes are a priority. The Seminar is a forum to compare ideas, and aims to encourage the organisations of the United Nations and donor countries to prepare an international project for innovation and training in human development open to the participation of all interested parties. |
