International Seminar

Cooperation to Reduce Social Exclusion
27 June 2000
1.30 – 3.45 p.m.

Conference Centre of Varembé(CCV)
Room B
Rue de Varembé 9
Geneva

The mechanisms and institutions of social exclusion are present the world over. The inaccessibility of citizenship rights is a problem everywhere, though some countries are affected more dramatically than others. The fight against social exclusion must involve concrete actions to expose these mechanisms and oppose institutions which exclude and segregate. In any case, the processes of globalisation also offer tools and opportunities to organise a network for groups, individuals, local democracies and national and international organisations fighting exclusion in a concrete way. The “International Network against Social Exclusion” whose secretariat is in Trieste, connects hundreds of experiences in more than thirty countries. This Network has the support of the United Nations and the Italian Cooperation; it has the purpose of publicising those practices which facilitate the integration of people in difficulty. It also opposes institutions and departments which have little respect for human rights. The Seminar, organised by the Network, provides a forum for the exchange of ideas on the subject and provides an opportunity to increase international participation.
